What a night!

The results are in and I'm so honoured to have been chosen by the people of Grey Highlands to represent you on municipal council.

I want to give a big shout-out to a team of super organized, energetic women who worked tirelessly with me over the life of the campaign. I also have to thank my husband Brian and daughters Rachel and Erin for being the most supportive family anyone could wish for.

I'm looking forward to working hard with my colleagues on council, community organizations and the residents of this great area to build a strong sustainable future for everyone. Let's do this.

About me

I am Sandy Thornton, and I'm proud to call Grey Highlands home. I have lived in the area for 16 years with my husband and two daughters.

My career in the global health industry means I bring strong organizational, financial and administrative experience to my candidacy.

My professional background required careful attention to financial responsibility, communication and managing competing priorities.

I am an active community member who takes part in a book club, pickleball, Probus, and gardening in Markdale for the seniors’ Day Away program. For the past two years, I have co-managed the women’s curling league in Markdale.

These experiences have connected me with the people of Grey Highlands and I hear their ideas, concerns, and hopes for the community.

"Municipal government has a direct impact on our everyday lives - from roads and infrastructure to recreation, planning, development and other services our residents rely on. Council needs people who will listen, ask questions, understand the issues and make responsible decisions."

Home: What Sandy will do

My priorities

"I'm not running because I think I have all the answers. I'm running because I care about Grey Highlands, I'm willing to listen and I bring a practical, thoughtful and community-minded voice to Council."

Developing strong, connected communities

Grey Highlands should continue to be a place where families can put down roots, seniors can remain connected to their community, businesses can succeed and residents can enjoy the natural and recreational opportunities around them.

I will encourage people to participate in building the future of Grey Highlands and support the organizations that bring them together.

Protecting our rural and natural environment

Our farms, forests, trails, waterways and rural landscapes are essential to what makes Grey Highlands distinctive.  Development and environmental stewardship need to be considered together.

Responsible growth

Grey Highlands is changing and growing. We need thoughtful planning that considers roads, water, wastewater, housing, transportation and other infrastructure before growth gets ahead of our ability to support it.

Responsive government

Residents deserve to understand how decisions are made and how their tax dollars are being spent.

Municipal decisions affect every citizen. Council must carefully consider priorities, value for money and long-term financial sustainability when making decisions.

I will listen to residents, communicate clearly and respectfully, and be accountable for the decisions council makes.
